Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a United States Federal Holiday observed on the last Monday of May .

Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War. It was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.

It has become a long weekend increasingly devoted to shopping, family gatherings, fireworks, trips to the beach, and marks the start of the summer vacation season!

How Do You Get Pollen Off Your Auto?

Did you know that pollen is as big of a threat to your  vehicles  paint as bird droppings?

Pollen sticks to the surface even if you keep it clean and slick. It leaves your vehicle with a green or yellow
coat that will eventually harm the surface if you leave it on for a long period of time. Unlike bird droppings, pollen is pretty easy to get off  without using harsh methods that could harm your paint.

  •                            What do you  need?
  • Water- Hose- Towel- Quick Spray Detail

    • 1
Spray the pollen off with water. Start on the roof and spray until the pollen is gone, then do the windshield, windows and rear window. Continue down  so the pollen is rinsed off completely, not just moved from one area to another. A water hose with a nozzle that has a forceful spray is best.
    • 2
Dry most of the water off  with a cotton towel. Some water can remain on.
    • 3
Spray quick detailer on  one  panel at a time. Wipe the detailer off using a microfiber towel. This removes any remaining pollen and creates a slick surface so pollen has a harder time sticking to the  surface.

How Do You Avoid Hydroplaning ?

One of the big hazards of  rainstorms for drivers is hydroplaning, when your car loses contact with the ground, and instead floats uncontrollably on a layer of water. It seems impossible–a ton of vehicle being undone by less than a quarter-inch of water–but any heavy rain is guaranteed to bring hydroplaning wrecks.
Hydroplaning happens when the water on the road in front of your tires accumulates faster than your tires can push it out of the way. The water forces its way between the road and the tire, and raises the car via water pressure. Not a lot, just a tiny fraction of an inch… but that’s enough to make your car “float.”
The effect is like hitting a patch of ice–you lose control, including the ability to brake and steer.
The  following factors that contribute to the risk of hydroplaning during a storm:
1.    Depth of Tire Tread. Another good reason to check your tire tread–worn tires can’t channel water away, and are more likely to cause hydroplaning.
2.    Speed of Car. The faster you’re going, the greater the risk of hydroplaning. Slow down in a heavy downpour, even if you know the road.
3.    Depth of Water. The deeper the water, the more quickly you’ll lose traction. But you don’t have to have puddles to be at risk–even a strong rain can build up quickly.
It can be difficult to tell if you are hydroplaning before that frightening moment when you realize you have no control:
If you find yourself beginning to hydroplane, first, don’t panic…don’t apply brakes…don’t try to turn the steering wheel. These could throw you car into a skid. Instead:
·         Hold the steering wheel firmly, and keep going straight.
·         Ease your foot off the accelerator until you can feel the tires grip the road again, or until you come to a stop.
·         If you must apply brakes (and if you have anti-lock brakes), brake with a slow, steady pressure.
Do not “pump” the brakes. The anti-lock mechanism automatically mimics pumping better than your foot can do it.

It is always important to drive at speeds appropriate to road conditions, and in a downpour, water accumulation is one of those “invisible” conditions.
                           Slow down in the rain…always.

Are You Ready For Motorcycle Season

When the weather warms up, motorcycles come out of garages  and riders hit the road.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation urges all drivers to give riders some space. Here are some hints that  the driver of a car, should know about motorcyclists:

1.  There are a lot more cars and trucks than motorcycles on the road.

2.  A motorcycle can be easily hidden in a car's blind spots.

3.  A motorcycle may seem to be farther away than it actually is.

4.  Motorcyclists often slow by downshifting or merely rolling off the throttle.

5.  Motorcyclists often adjust their position within a lane to be seen more easily.

6.  Turn signals on a motorcycle are usually not self-canceling.

7.  Maneuverability is one of a motorcycle's better characteristics.

8.  Stopping distance for motorcycles is nearly the same as for cars, but slippery
     pavement makes stopping more difficult.

9.  When a motorcycle is in motion, see more than the motorcycle.
( See the person under  helmet, who could be your friend, neighbor or relative)

Remember : Give them their fair share of the roadway and don't follow too close!

Is Your 4 Wheel Baby Ready For Warm Weather?

Good Bye   Cold Mornings ~ Hello Warm Driving Weather

The following are some steps you can take to prep  your vehilce  for spring  and  to repair it  from months of harsh winter driving.

• Undercarriage Road Salt – Road salt can damage your vehicle’s undercarriage by eating away or corroding the metal. A thorough cleaning at a car wash should do the trick.

• Check the tires – It’s crucial to check your tires after weather changes because tire pressure changes about 1 pound per square inch for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit change in temperature.

• Wiper blades – Windshield wipers take a beating during the winter weather – wiping away dirt, debris and salt and gravel spray. Make sure the blades are making full contact with the windshield and have not dried out.

• Rotate tires – This should be done roughly every 5,000-10,000 miles and it can extend the life of your tires significantly by reducing wear.

• Change oil and filter – Some car makers suggest changing to a heavier oil to help your vehicle’s engine perform more efficiently during warmer weather.

• Change air filter – Your car’s air filter prevents dust and other debris from getting into the engine’s running parts, meaning less efficient use of gas and weaker engine performance.

• Flush and fill cooling system. This is cheap insurance against engine failure. Experts recommend flushing every 2 years for most vehicles.

• Check radiator and gas caps – Tight fitting caps on the radiator and gas tank are important. Radiator caps can corrode and deteriorate, so it’s a good idea to replace yours as often as you flush the cooling system.

• Check battery and plugs – Make sure battery posts and connections are clean. Spark plugs fire as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles.

• Clean the interior – It’s easy to use your car or truck as a storage area for all kinds of things (including useless junk and garbage), especially in the cold months when you don’t feel like cleaning your car in the freezing cold. Take the time to de-clutter your car. It’s worth it.

What Is In Your Emergency Car Care Kit?

Wherever your vehicle takes you, a short trip or long vacation, it is important to leave the house prepared. For some, survival gear means a cell phone and some good CD's. However, a situation that requires safety measures can occur at any time, so its good sense to plan ahead for emergencies.

Start with a large  plastic container that will store easily in a trunk or behind the seat of a truck. You can line the container with a wool blanket, which can be very useful if you are stranded in the cold.

Next step is to pack three smaller containers to fit into the large one:

First to consider is the conventional first aid kit to fit inside the larger container. This  should include bandages, first aid tape and alcohol wipes. Things to add to this could be ice packs (the kind you squeeze to freeze) and some antihistamine (in case of insect bites).

Next, prepare for emergencies involving your vehicle itself.

Start with flares and a flashlight. Then add some liquid tire patch, and make sure your jack and spare tire are available and in good shape. Be sure to add a gallon of water for your car, and a clean empty gas can in case you need to walk to a gas station, however, never ride around with gas or gas fumes in a container in your car. Include a can of "dry gas" in case of frozen gas line and a container of oil and some antifreeze/coolant and you will have all you need to respond to simple car trouble.

Some optional items for the third box, you may want to consider is a separate small container is a gallon of drinking water, a few energy bars and some trail mix. Also, a clean, dry pair of socks and a fold up rain slicker can be invaluable on a camping trip or a rainy jog.

Label the small containers and pack them in the large one and label the outside of the large one so that anyone knows what is contained within, as you may not be the one responding to the emergency.

Alert your family and friends to pack a similar kit so that they, too, will be protected.
