Did Your Windshield Have Ice On It Today?

It's already started - You walk out the door in the morning to leave for the day and there it is.... ICE ON YOUR WINDSHIELD!!! Here are a few tips to get you through those days when the ice is just too thick to melt and scraping it off is a must.

1. First thing to do is start your vehicle engine. This will allow heat to travel up to the windshield and start the melting process naturally.

2. Turn your vehicle defroster on low. Turning it on high is not a good idea when the windshield is full of ice, this could cause the window to crack.

3. Use an ice scraper to remove the ice from your windshield. This tool is specially designed just for this annoying problem.

NO Ice Scraper?? Keep Reading:
4. Kitchen utensils are not only good for cooking, they are also good for removing the ice of your windshield. Plastic spatulas work wonders on thin ice.

5. Keep salt in arms length when winter arises. NOT cooking salt, but salt that is grainy. Take the salt and pour it on the windshield, then with gloves on, rub the salt onto the windshield. Step back for a few minutes so the salt can start to melt the ice away and then start scraping.

6. Try this simple homemade solution - One of the best ways to remove the ice off of your windshield is a simple mixture that contains items you find inside of your house. Fill a spray bottle with one cup of water, one cup of rubbing alcohol and one cup of vinegar. Shake well and spray it all over the windshield. Let it sit for about five minutes and watch the ice just roll down the glass. You can try scraping it as well, but usually all you need to so is spray and watch.

7. This might sound a bit strange but .... but you can plug a blow dryer in a waterproof extension cord and point it at your window when iced up. Don't turn it on high, keep it on low and move slowly across the windshield until you see the ice slowly disappear. This process may take a bit of time.

You can always AVOID ice on your windshield by investing in a piece of cardboard shaped to the size of your windshield. Place it on the windshield the night before a freeze, then remove in the morning with no worries about scraping or melting the ice off. All you have to worry about is keeping yourself warm.

Do You Use Winter Wiper Blades?

Oh well.... It is getting to be that time ....

Is it time to change your wiper blades to Winter Blades?

Winter Blades have a rubber sheath over all of the moving components inside  the wiper. They have  springs built inside to actually hug the wiper blade tight to your windshield.

You have probably  noticed in the wintertime, you're driving along and try and use your wiper blades, they won't touch all of the windshield itself.  It'll actually leave streaks and portions of it that are un cleaned. This is from is from ice, debris, and snow, getting inside of the springs and keeping them from contacting your windshield. What the rubber sheath does is keep those  particles from affecting the way the mechanics of the wiper blade has been designed to operate.

Is it a good idea if you do a lot of driving in the wintertime to go ahead and change out your wiper blades?

You decide!

Will This Stop You From Texting And Driving?

It’s no secret that drivers face distractions while behind the wheel.

Texting while driving is  considered dangerous by many people, including authorities. It  has been outlawed for all drivers in  Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada. New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

A Virginia-based company is working on  a product   that can tell if a person inside the vehicle is texting behind the wheel. This  device  picks up on radio frequencies that come from a cellphone being used inside the car.  Text messages emit a different frequency than other cellphone activities. This would allow such a device to determine if a driver were possibly sending a text behind the wheel.

If you’re driving down the road in the future and you see a cop pointing what appears to be a radar gun your way, stepping on the brake to slow down might not help you out. Speeding might not be what he’s looking for!

Car-Lotta Credit reminds you not to text and drive- The life you save may be your own.

Ever Think Of Being An Auto Mechanic?

Working on cars  on the weekends is all well and good, but is this really something you could see yourself doing ?  It does take some initiative!!
The automobile is one of the single most important inventions in use in our society. People all over the country rely on the cars and trucks on our nation’s highways for a very long list of reasons, so it makes sense that skilled professionals who can maintain those vehicles are in demand.
Automotive  technicians,( mechanics)  are in demand in a variety of settings, including gas station garages, car dealerships and government agencies. The field offers a range of possibilities and the opportunity to specialize, particularly for people who complete technological training and certification.

Mechanics work with all of a  vehicles parts and systems, from the brakes and air conditioning to the belts, hoses and steering. In smaller garages or companies, a mechanic must be familiar with all of these systems to diagnose customers' problems, but at larger garages, technicians may specialize in particular areas.

Mechanics must be able to use a range of tools --including  electronic diagnostic equipment. Strong  problem-solving skills are a plus  to find and repair problems.
If you think you have what it takes and are looking to find out more about what it takes to be an auto mechanic check  or to just find an   Automotive Technician Program in your area visit:  http://www.techschooldirectory.com/states/pennsylvania/automotive-technician.htm

Car-Lotta Credit and Car Sales has PA Certified Technicians at each of the locations.
Would  you like to  be one of  them ?

What Are You Doing For National Car Care Month?

Staying safe on the road depends on more than your skill as a driver. You also need to make sure your vehicle isn't going to surprise you with a tire blowout or breakdown – and that you're equipped to handle emergencies if they  happen.

Your vehicle’s occupants deserve a safe ride. General safety checks before driving, especially on long trips, can help protect you and your passengers. Routine maintenance, including regular tune-ups, oil changes, battery checks, and tire rotations, extends your vehicle life and ensures your vehicle is operating in top shape.

Since October is National Car Care Month, here are some tips to help keep yourself and your passengers safe and sound

  • Fluid level check
  • Alignment check
  • Battery check
  • Lights check
  • Visual under-hood inspection
Car-Lotta Credit and Car Sales wants to remind you that Automotive safety shouldn’t be an afterthought. We depend on our vehicles to do a lot for us, but new safety technology can’t replace the attentiveness of the driver.

Fall Is Here- Is Your 4 Wheel Baby?

Your vehicle made it through summer, but  like it or not ... winter's coming! Whether it's a matter of repairing the wear and tear of summer or getting ready for those colder days ahead, autumn is the ideal time for automotive maintenance and repair.

Here are some tips about getting your vehicle ready for winter:
Read your owner's manual and follow the manufacturer's service intervals.
Replace worn wiper blades and keep  washer fluid on hand to fight road salt, grit and other grime.
Replace worn tires with all-season radials or snow tires, as conditions warrant. Don't forget to check the spare tire and the tire jack.
If you are not a do-it-yourselfer, find a repair shop with a courteous staff, qualified technicians and modern equipment. Look for a reputable repair facility  to do those jobs you cannot or do not want to perform.
Engine performance problems such as rough idling, poor acceleration or hard starts should be corrected before cold weather sets in. (This will help you  get better gasoline mileage.)
Check the condition of your battery and cables, plus the radiator, and all hoses and belts.
Flush your cooling system/radiator  and refill  as recommended. Be sure to check the level, condition and concentration of your  coolant/antifreeze periodically. (Never remove the radiator cap until the engine has thoroughly cooled!)
Check your  heater and defroster to be sure they are in good working condition. Also  make sure your  exhaust system is free of any  leaks which could be  potentially deadly condition in closed vehicles.
Make sure you  carry emergency gear: flares, boots, gloves, ice scraper, high-energy snacks, a blanket, shovel, flashlight,  and a cell phone.

Remember ... Regular maintenance is the best preventative for winter breakdowns.

What Do You Do With Your Old Tires?

Checking regularly to make sure your tires are  properly inflated, keeping your front end properly aligned  can extend the life of your tires.  Unfortunately... eventually all tires wear out. Most tires have tread-wear indicators that appear when the tire treads are worn down to the legal limit. You  can  do a simple test by placing a penny into the groove. If you can see the top of Abe Lincoln’s head, it’s time to head to the tire store.

What should you do with your old tires? If you’re a good citizen, you will  dispose of your tires the responsible way, by recycling them.
Americans wear out about 290 million tires a year, and they recycle 233 million of them, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
To find out  how to and where to recycle tires in check out the following link to   DEP's Tire Waste Program:

Should You Pay Someone To Detail Your Vehicle ?

Environmental pollution and other factors attack your car’s finish on a daily basis, and your  interior is subject to constant wear and tear.

Most people wash their car when it looks dirty. We recommend you do it a bit earlier than that.  Then there is  the guy that justifies not cleaning his vehicle  because he’s sure that it will rain as soon as he does it. A thorough  wash is  recommended once a month, but it could be more depending on what you’re doing with your vehicle.

While many people often will run to the local car wash regularly, the fact remains that detailing a vehicle is something that you should also do on a regular basis.

Why should you get your car detailed? The answer is the public car washes use harsh chemicals and a one size fits all mentality to clean just about any type of vehicle that goes through the wash. While this may be convenient, it can pose potential harm to your vehicle.

Over time, trim, rubber, plastic, and the paint of your vehicle can show the effects of the damage that regular car washes can cause. With an auto detailing service, you can rest assured that your vehicle is being cleaned with microfiber cloths, gentle cleansers, and is being treated by solvents and solutions that help your paint job to last through the years.

When it comes to interior detailing, nothing beats the experts.   They know how to get to the hard to reach places in your vehicle in order to clean every nook and cranny to get your vehicle looking great. These professionals are also masters when it comes to auto carpet cleaning in order to remove stains and odors.

Car-Lotta Credit and Car Sales has a  professional detail er  at each of the locations to thoroughly clean your vehicle before you take it home.

How Many Peopel Can You Fit In Your Vehicle ?

Ever wonder just how many people would fit in your vehicle?

The number of passengers allowed in a   vehicle  is  dictated by the number of seat belts available. Legally, a car with five seat belts can only hold five passengers. Failing to adhere to this standard can result in a fine.

In  November of 2012, a group of female gymnasts in the UK crammed themselves into a  Mini Cooper in the pursuit of a world record. The organizers had previously achieved an impressive 27 people.

Will Your Current Vehicle Last 10 Years?

It’s official, Americans are keeping their vehicles  longer. Maybe it’s because of uncertainty about the economy, or because manufacturers are making better cars, but the fact is that the average American is keeping his or her car for more than a decade now. The average car on the road is 11 years old and nearly 8 out of 10 drivers plan on keeping their next car for at least 10 years as well.

What does it take to keep a car running smoothly for a decade? It may be  easier than you think. Whether you prefer to spend the weekend taking care of your car at home, or feel better letting a certified mechanic handle the tune-ups and repairs, there are more resources than ever both online and inside garages to help you keep your car running smoothly down the road.
The following 3 secrets will help you stay on top of your car’s care to keep you on the road instead of on the side.
1. Know your mileage checkpoints.  Each vehicle has slightly different manufacturer’s specifications for service checks. Find yours in your vehicle’s manual to know what mileage markers your car will need a check-up and which components of your car will need to be watched carefully.
2. Ask a friend to drive. While you drive your car every day and are accustomed to what you call its “quirks,” your friend will be able to tell if something feels wrong. Ask them to look for soft brakes, your steering wheel pulling to either side, funny noises, or anything unusual.
3.  Make the time preform  the following:
  • Tire check
  • Exterior light check
  • Wiper blade check
  • Under hood inspection:
    • Battery
    • Battery cables
    • Air filter
    • Belts
    • Hoses
    • Fluids
  • Under car inspection:
    • Brakes
    • Steering and suspension
    • Drive axles
Preventive maintenance is without question the most effective and least expensive way to keep your car running for a decade or longer. Regular automotive checks can help prevent costly repairs in the future and keep your car and its passengers safe. However, sometimes repairs are unavoidable, so set aside money each month in case of emergencies. Smart planning along with proactive, preventive maintenance can keep your car running smoothly and safely down the road, and that’s worth a fortune.

At Car-Lotta Credit and Car Sales- We perform a thorough inspection of all our vehicles before the are ready to be sold to our customers.

What Are You Doing This Labor Day?

Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. In high society, Labor Day is (or was) considered the last day of the year when it is fashionable for women to wear white.

Labor Day marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons. NCAA teams usually play their first games the week before Labor Day, with the NFL traditionally playing their first game the Thursday following Labor Day. Most school districts that started summer vacation in mid June will resume school near this day.

The first Labor Day in the United States was observed on September 5, 1882, in Boston, by the Central Labor Union of New York, the nation's first integrated major trade union. It became a federal holiday in 1894. Singed into law as a National Holiday by Grover Cleveland.

All Car-Lotta Credit locations will be closed Monday Sepetmber 1st  in observance of Labor Day.

We will re open Tuesday September 2nd  at 9:00 am.

Why Should You Maintain Your Vehicle ?

Proper Maintenance   is an important part  of vehicle ownership. When you maintain your vehicle  in the best condition, you can avoid unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs. Proper care and attention will help  you have a stress-free ownership experience. You can save time and money by following a regular maintenance schedule.
You should check fluid and engine oil levels at set periods, as well as your tire inflation levels. It is also important that you change your engine oil and replace filters, spark plugs and brakes based on the recommended schedule outlined in your owner's manual.

Not only will you spend less on a car repair, but your proper car care  can also lead to a more efficient vehicle. Scheduled maintenance can increase your gas mileage and lower  operating costs. It is a major benefit during times of crazy  gas prices.

While many auto owners p put off  maintenance until it is absolutely necessary, this can lead to further damage. A neglected vehicle  is more likely to stop working and require you to invest in intensive auto repair. Driving  a  well maintained vehicle can extend its useful life. Preventative maintenance is your  best choice!

Your vehicle  deserves expert attention and the best care possible. Hiring a skilled professional for a car repair can help you avert avoidable setbacks and reduce your expenses.

Car-Lotta Credit and Car Sales wants to help you get the most out of your vehicle ownership. Our locations can even help you find a reputable auto repair shop in your area.

How Do You Drive in Rainy Conditions?

How to drive safely in  Rainy Conditions is  simple if you  remember that Storms can crop up suddenly and present substantial hazards on the road; especially during Summer. Losing control of your car on wet pavement is a frightening experience.

Skids are scary but hydroplaning is  nerve-wracking. Hydroplaning happens when the water in front of your tires builds up faster than your car's weight can push it out of the way. The water pressure causes your car to rise up and slide on a thin layer of water between your tires.

Prevent skids by driving slowly and carefully, especially on curves. Steer and brake with a light touch. When you need to stop or slow, do not brake hard or lock the wheels and risk a skid. Maintain mild pressure on the brake pedal.

Avoid hydroplaning by keeping your tires inflated correctly. Maintain good tire tread. Don't put off replacing worn tires. Slow down when roads are wet, and stay away from puddles. Try to drive in the tire tracks left by the cars in front of you.

Taking  simple tips into account can save your life.
Car-Lotta Credit is concerned about our customers- We hope all of our customers drive safely in all weather conditions.

How Do You Drive In An Active Work Zone?

Each year  Pennsylvanians and travelers through the state can anticipate seeing many work zones. While PennDOT and is  busy improving the 40,000 miles of roadway and 25,000 bridges in its care, motorists are urged  to keep safety in mind.

Active work zones must be designated as such to notify motorists when they enter and leave the work zone. A white flashing light attached to the “Active Work Zone When Flashing” sign will indicate an active work zone. The flashing light will only be activated when workers are present and turned off when workers are not present.

The following are a few tips  to keep in mind if you encounter  work zones,
·         Drive the posted work-zone speed limit.
·         Stay alert and pay close attention to signs and flaggers.
·         Turn on your headlights if signs instruct you to do so.
·         Maintain a safe distance around vehicles. Don’t tailgate.
·         Use four-way flashers when stopped or traveling slowly.
·         Avoid distractions and give your full attention to the road.
·         Always buckle up.
·         Expect the unexpected.
·         Be patient.

Penalty  for NOT driving safely in an active work zone  ......

Car-Lotta Credit wants to remind you that this is for your safety and the safety of the workers.
Fifteen-Day Loss of License for Driving Dangerously. Motorists caught driving 11 miles per hour or more above the posted speed limit in an active work zone, or who are involved in a crash in an active work zone and are convicted for failing to drive at a safe speed, automatically will lose their license for 15 days.

Fines Doubled/Jail Time Increased. Fines for certain traffic violations – including speeding, driving under the influence, and failure to obey traffic devices – are doubled for active work zones. Also, the law provides for up to five years of additional jail time for individuals convicted of homicide by vehicle for a crash that occurred in an active work zone.

What Do You Keep In Your Vehicle?

CarLotta Credit and Car Sales would like to remind you...No matter what the weather, summer or winter, these are the 5 things you should always have in your car..

1) First Aid Kit. You never know what can happen. If you have kids, this is even more important. You might want to add a few extra bandages to the kit. They are small and are not affected by the temperature changes in your car.

2) Flashlight. The best one is the type that you hold in your mouth, or the kind that strap on your head. This will free up your hands for whatever might need to be done.

3) Jumper Cables. You left your lights on and the car won't start. The battery is old and  failed. This handy item is often used and easy to store.

Are You Trying to Beat The Heat?

Baby it's  HOT Outside!

The summer heat can be unbearable. As the summer sun begins to get hotter and hotter, you are probably looking for ways to keep cool.

Why not take a swim?

There's nothing that cools you off better than a dip in the cool water.

Don't have a pool of your own? Don't worry- many Pennsylvania State Parks have lakes or pools for swimming.

How do you keep automobile cool?

Did you know that on a day that is 80°F, the temperature in your vehicle can reach over 120°F because sunlight gets trapped inside. These temperatures are  harmful to the body with prolonged exposure, and can provide unnecessary wear and tear on a vehicle. Fortunately, with the proper precautions there are many ways to keep a car cool in the summer sun.

One method that works  handy and is  completely free is leaving blankets on the seats while the car is not in use. The blanket will be exposed, but the seat will be shielded from direct sunlight. Of course, the blankets will be hot when you return, but they can simply be tossed on the floor or into the trunk.

Another method is using a sunshade. Sunshades  are sometimes metallic and look almost like aluminum foil stretched across the inside of a windshield. Others, especially ones designed for back seat windows, have child-friendly designs  on them. Their use is to  keep the sun from reaching the inside of the car and heating up the seats.

A simple solution is to  park facing away from the sun. Parking in the shade or in a garage is also highly effective and recommended whenever possible.

When Should You Fill Your Gas Tank?

It is summer so get ready for more pain at the pump now that warm weather is here. Blame simple physics: cold contracts, heat expands.  Simply put.... you lose at the gas pump when temperatures rise.

Here’s why.

The government has standards for measuring gas. According to that standard, fuel should be measured at a temperature of 60 degrees. A change in temperature changes the composition of the gas. Gasoline  expands or contracts percent for every 15-degrees above or below 60 degrees. In other words, the fuel contracts in the cold. So when you buy a gallon, you get more energy for your money. In the heat, just the opposite is true: even though you’re still buying a gallon of gas, you get less energy for your money than you do in cold weather.

If you buy 25 gallons of gas at 75 degrees at a price of $4 a gallon, the higher temperature can cost you an extra $1. At 90 degrees, you’ll spend an extra $2. With gas at record high prices, it’s hard to justify spending even a few cents more than necessary for a fill-up.

So ....what can you  do?

You can eliminate some fuel loss from evaporative emissions by filling up at night or early in morning, when temperatures are cooler. Look for gas stations that do a high volume business. It’s likely the tanks at those stations will be refilled more often, so the gas will have less time to heat up to the environmental temperature.

Is Your Vehicle Ready For Vacation?

Summer is finally here and most people are itching for a vacation but like most of us, can’t afford the room in the budget to get away.

Remember…. Pennsylvania is full of Art- Culture- Activities- Events- Festivals- Camp Grounds- Cabins- Bed and Breakfasts- Amusements Parks and Scenic Byways.

You can plan a day trip or a few days away without breaking the bank.

It doesn't matter if  you are  headed in the minivan to Walt Disney World or to Ricketts Glen for a day trip  you need to make sure your vehicle is as ready to travel as you are!

Here are  a few suggestions to prepare your vehicle for a summer road trip:
                         1.  Coolant system- The number one reason cars break down in the summer                                      is they overheat. Make sure all fluids have been changed and the system is ready.
·         2.  Tires –All tires need to have the right amount of pressure and have been rotated as recommended.  You would be surprised how the proper amount of pressure in your tires helps with gas mileage as well. Also, how is that spare tire?

·         3.  Windshield Wipers – Coming off of the winter season, sometimes the wipers need to be changed from working hard on ice and snow. Wipers are inexpensive to change and a great idea to go ahead and replace before heading out on a long trip.

·         4.  Batteries Check to see if there is any corrosion that has occurred over the winter. If so, get that off and make sure it is connected properly

·         5.  Lights Check all bulbs. Don’t forget to have someone look behind you and make sure all proper brake lights are working as well. You don’t want to get pulled over while heading out on vacation for a non- working light!

·         6.  Oil – Has it been changed recently? Every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. If you are planning on putting a lot of miles on your car during the trip, it may be best to go ahead and change it even if your vehicle is technically not due for an oil change.

·         7.  Have an Emergency Kit! Always have a “just in case” care package. Flashlights, batteries, water to drink as well as water for the car.

We at   Car-Lotta Credit and Car Sales hope you enjoy your summer vacation.
