A ban on text messaging while driving is now in effect in Pennsylvania.
Starting March 8th, 2012, text messaging while behind the wheel will be subject to primary enforcement, which allows law officers to stop and cite offenders for that reason alone. Fines: $50.
The texting ban enables police to pull over drivers for typing, sending or reading messages, or using or looking at handheld or pad electronic devices. Police can conclude the driver broke the law based on sight, statements made by the driver or passengers or, if necessary, by obtaining cellphone records.
