When Do You Fill Your Gas Tank?

It is summer so get ready for more pain at the pump now that warm weather is here. Blame simple physics: cold contracts, heat expands.  Simply put.... you lose at the gas pump when temperatures rise.

Here’s why.


 The government has standards for measuring gas. According to that standard, fuel should be measured at a temperature of 60 degrees. A change in temperature changes the composition of the gas. Gasoline  expands or contracts percent for every 15-degrees above or below 60 degrees. In other words, the fuel contracts in the cold. So when you buy a gallon, you get more energy for your money. In the heat, just the opposite is true: even though you’re still buying a gallon of gas, you get less energy for your money than you do in cold weather.

If you buy 25 gallons of gas at 75 degrees at a price of $4 a gallon, the higher temperature can cost you an extra $1. At 90 degrees, you’ll spend an extra $2. With gas at record high prices, it’s hard to justify spending even a few cents more than necessary for a fill-up.


So ....what can you  do?

You can eliminate some fuel loss from evaporative emissions by filling up at night or early in morning, when temperatures are cooler. Look for gas stations that do a high volume business. It’s likely the tanks at those stations will be refilled more often, so the gas will have less time to heat up to the environmental temperature.

Pets are part of the family. We like to take our animals  with us on outings.  No matter how prepared, it seems we always have to run a quick errand or two on the way to wherever we are going.

We solve this problem by parking in the shade, leashing or kenneling the dogs, and family members staying with the car and the dogs, keeping doors and windows open.

Not even for a minute. Not even with the car running and air conditioner on. On a warm day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. On an 85-degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. Your pet may suffer irreversible organ damage or worse.

Even when parked in the shade on a warm day, animals   can succumb to  heatstroke or  death if left in the car unattended. Sadly, it happens every year.

If you are alone, the above scenario isn't possible and more creativity is needed. Here are some ideas.

• Use the drive-up if possible. This works for some restaurants, banks, and pharmacies.
• Shop in pet-welcome stores. Pet stores typically allow pets, and they do carry "human" items like candy and snacks if you are in a hurry.
• Utilize a travel kennel outside the car, in the shade, if possible. Travel kennels are a great way to keep your pet safe while in fresh air, with cool water, and so on.

What Do You Do With Your Old Tires?

Checking regularly to make sure your tires are  properly inflated, keeping your front end properly aligned  can extend the life of your tires.  Unfortunately... eventually all tires wear out. Most tires have tread-wear indicators that appear when the tire treads are worn down to the legal limit. You  can  do a simple test by placing a penny into the groove. If you can see the top of Abe Lincoln’s head, it’s time to head to the tire store. 

What should you do with your old tires? If you’re a good citizen, you will  dispose of your tires the responsible way, by recycling them.

Americans wear out about 290 million tires a year, and they recycle 233 million of them, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
