How Good Is Your Car Battery?

Baby It's Cold Outside!

A Dead battery can be a real  annoyance. You  never really know when your battery is going to need a boost. This  usually happens at the most inopportune time—and if there’s no one around to help out with jumper cables, you may need to pay a tow truck to have your vehicle towed to a mechanic. Then  pay your mechanic to fix the problem.

A solution is to get  yourself a battery charger. You’ll be able to help yourself and probably  other drivers who break down as well. They are very simple to use and  relatively  inexpensive. It is a purchase worth the  investment  and  the time it takes to figure out   how to use  when you  weigh these  against the possibility of being stranded.

Car-Lotta reminds you to be prepared!

How Clean Is Your Vehicle?

This time of year, salt and/or sand can be found covering area roadways.
This raises the question … How often you should be washing your vehicle?

Winter storms  bring out the plow trucks.  Salt, anti-skid, or a combination of these are applied to the roadways during snow and ice removal operations. Salt is used to melt snow or ice and anti-skid helps to provide traction. The amount of material on the roadway depends on type of road, type and duration of storm, and temperature. Roads will also be  pre-treated  salt with a brine solution to help it work more effectively. Brine is also used to pre-treat roads prior to a storm.

These materials  can do a lot of damage to your vehicle. If  they  make  it inside a crack in your paint job, it will lead to rust.

The undercarriage of the vehicle should be  be cleaned by a power washer after every storm.  When washing your vehicle be sure the outdoor temperature is above 32 degrees. If it’s too cold, you might freeze your doors shut.

If you want extra protection, you should wax your vehicle in the fall and once during the winter months.

Car-Lotta Credit and Car Sales has three expert detailers to make sure your vehicle is standing tall when you drive it home.

Was There Ice On Your Windshield This Morning?

The cold weather has begun -

Did you walk out the door this morning to leave for the day and find .... ICE ON YOUR WINDSHIELD??

Here are a few tips to get you through those days when the ice is just too thick to melt and scraping it off is a must.

1. First thing to do is start your vehicle engine. This will allow heat to travel up to the windshield and start the melting process naturally.

2. Turn your vehicle defroster on low. Turning it on high is not a good idea when the windshield is full of ice, this could cause the window to crack.

3. Use an ice scraper to remove the ice from your windshield. This tool is specially designed just for this annoying problem.

NO Ice Scraper?? Keep Reading:

4. Kitchen utensils are not only good for cooking, they are also good for removing the ice of your windshield. Plastic spatulas work wonders on thin ice.

5. Keep salt in arms length when winter arises. NOT cooking salt, but salt that is grainy. Take the salt and pour it on the windshield, then with gloves on, rub the salt onto the windshield. Step back for a few minutes so the salt can start to melt the ice away and then start scraping.

6. Try this simple homemade solution - One of the best ways to remove the ice off of your windshield is a simple mixture that contains items you find inside of your house. Fill a spray bottle with one cup of water, one cup of rubbing alcohol and one cup of vinegar. Shake well and spray it all over the windshield. Let it sit for about five minutes and watch the ice just roll down the glass. You can try scraping it as well, but usually all you need to so is spray and watch.

7. This might sound a bit strange but .... but you can plug a blow dryer in a waterproof extension cord and point it at your window when iced up. Don't turn it on high, keep it on low and move slowly across the windshield until you see the ice slowly disappear. This process may take a bit of time.

You can always AVOID ice on your windshield by investing in a piece of cardboard shaped to the size of your windshield. Place it on the windshield the night before a freeze, then remove in the morning with no worries about scraping or melting the ice off. All you have to worry about is keeping yourself warm.

Traveling For Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving  is  undoubtedly the busiest travel time of the year. Notorious transportation delays, traffic and travel snags meet travelers at nearly every turn. But with a bit of foresight and some thoughtful planning, you can ease some travel headaches whether you're heading home for the holidays or escaping for a drama-free adventure.

Regardless of your plans, you'll be thankful for these Thanksgiving travel tips.

1. Plan out an alternate route

More travelers mean more cars, and more accidents, make sure you have at least one alternate route planned out that you can take to avoid huge delays. Try to plan your route along less popular freeways. Even if the mileage is a bit more it will be worth it when you’re driving 65 for that extra 10 miles than stuck locked in traffic for an extra 2 hours. This is also a good idea for those traveling very long distances where weather may be an issue.

2. Have a connected navigator

It doesn’t do you any good knowing about a great alternate route when you’re already swamped in traffic, so try to have a passenger that can look online at the traffic as you go. There are tons of great apps out there like Sigalert.com, Waze, and INRIX Traffic. With the help of your passenger and one of these apps you can see where the trouble areas are on the road and proactively avoid them. If you plan on going it alone make sure to pull off the road before using your phone. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of single passenger vehicles.

3. Leave at an awkward hour

Driving at night may not be fun, but it is a great way to avoid the traffic saving you time and stress. Consider resting all day and not getting on the road until 9pm. It is important to make sure that you get plenty of rest before setting out on a long night drive, as fatigued driving creates a huge hazard on the road.

4. Make your drive on Thanksgiving Day

Generally the traffic is much lighter across the U.S. on Thanksgiving Day itself, meaning that you can avoid the hassle of traffic the day before and get where you’re going without having to leave at a strange hour or risk sitting in traffic for hours. Unless you are traveling an extreme distance, leaving at 6 am Thursday morning should give you more than enough time to make it wherever you are going in time for dinner.

5. Leave Early!

Sunday is by far the worst day to be making your return trip, and the traffic will only increase as the day goes on and the last of the stragglers are getting back on the road. Friday is the best day to hit the road for the return trip. Of course that does not leave you a whole lot of time to visit the family if you just drove up the day before, consider taking off the following Monday and returning then. That way you’ll miss all of the holiday traffic, and have an extra two days to spend with the family — OK, maybe just leave Friday.

Car-Lotta Car Sales  will be closing on Wednesday, November 21st 2018 at 5:00 pm and will be closed Thursday, November 22nd 2018 for the Thanksgiving.  We will re open on Friday, November 23rd, 2018  at

Did You Know It's Deer Crash Season?

Did you know that  fall means deer-related  crash season is upon us?  Drivers are more likely to  hit  a deer over the next three months than any other time of the year.  October through December is deer migration and mating season.  During this time, deer are much more active and will chase and follow other deer across roadways with no hesitation.

PennDOT reports that in 2017 there were 5,647 deer-related crashes in Pennsylvania. Those accidents caused 1,275 injuries and 17 deaths.

These types of accidents can cause serious injuries and thousands of dollars in property damage to  vehicles.

Here are a few safety tips to help ensure your safety through Deer Crash Season .
  • Slow down and take your time when driving.
  • When you see one deer, always assume there may be others near. re
  • Never swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid hitting a deer.
  • After an accident, inspect your vehicle and make sure it is safe to drive.
  • Contact local authorities right away if you want an incident report. Some insurance companies will need this if you plan on making a claim for the damages done to your vehicle.
Officials  say that two types of crashes should always be reported to authorities: A crash that involves a vehicle being damaged to the point it cannot be driven and an accident that results in injuries or death.

Car-Lotta reminds you that sometimes hitting a deer is unavoidable.  Drivers should reduce their speed, wear their seat belts and eliminate all distractions while driving to ensure their safety.

Did You Fall Back?

Spring Forward – Fall Back
Also called Fall Back and Winter Time.

This term is meant to trigger your memory to set your clocks forward 1 hour in the spring at the start of DST, and 1 hour back in the fall when DST ends.
A different way to remember which direction to set your clock for DST is that in the spring, you bring out (or forward) the garden furniture and in the fall you put it back.
In North America, it is common to use the word fall to denote the season, while other English-speaking countries usually call it autumn. “Spring Forward – Fall Back” is therefore a phrase most often heard in the USA and Canada.

Nov 4, 2018 - Daylight Saving Time Ends

When local daylight time is about to reach
Sunday, November 4, 2018, 2:00:00 am clocks are turned backward 1 hour to
Sunday, November 4, 2018, 1:00:00 am local standard time instead.
Sunrise and sunset will be about 1 hour earlier on Nov 4, 2018 than the day before.
There will be more light in the morning.

Does Your 4 Wheel Baby Like The Cold Weather?

It's  getting here..... The cold weather is right around the corner!!

Vehicles, like many human, tend to not function as well when it’s cold. Just as it’s necessary for people to bundle up in coats, hats, and gloves in cold weather,  your auto needs a similar kind of attention.
Maintaining your vehicle can help prevent problems during extreme weather. You may still may find yourself out in the cold because your car doors were frozen shut or your car won’t start because of the arctic temperatures.
Here are a few tips to help keep this from happening:
Drive your car. Subzero temperatures can cause car batteries to freeze, but driving or running the car reduces this risk.
Before parking your car for the night or for an  extended period of time, make sure there’s plenty of gas in the tank. The cold weather can cause condensation to form on the walls of an empty tank, which may lead to frozen fuel lines
If your  locks are frozen try  petroleum jelly to melt the ice. Dip the key into it and hen insert it into the lock. Once in the lock, try to wiggle the key, but do not force the key to turn. You may have to repeat this  step a few  times.
Make sure  your tires are properly inflated. Tire pressure can affect handling, gas mileage, and steering,
Take the time to scrape your windows clean. If  wipers are stuck to the windshield and you turn them on, you could cause a lot of problems, including burning up the wiper motor.

Where Are Your Keys

While vehicles thefts overall are decreasing, car thefts with keys left inside are increasing.
It seems like a no-brainer....... Take your keys with you when you get out of your car!!!

A report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau reports that there were over  126,603 car thefts with keys left inside between 2012 and 2015.

The research revealed interesting information about where and when car thefts with keys left inside were most common:
  • The top five states for car thefts with keys left inside during this reporting period were California, Texas, Florida, Michigan and Ohio .
  • Saturday was the most common day for car thefts with keys left inside followed by Friday  and Monday.
Car thefts with keys left inside are especially unfortunate because they don’t need to happen. With so many advanced anti-theft technologies for autos out there, leaving your keys in the car is an open invitation out there for car thieves.

Car-Lotta Credit and Car Sales reminds you- NEVER leave your keys in the car!!

Would You Know What To Do If You Were Stuck On A Railroad Track?

Obviously, if you are  in a situation such as this, you won't have time to whip out a laptop computer and log on to Google what to do. The purpose of this How-To is to inform beforehand.
Most  don't give much thought to situations such as these (as they will probably never be faced with them), but if YOU do find yourself unexpectedly faced with the kind of emergency, we don't want you to  panic  and act on rash impulse.

Car-Lotta Car Sales wants YOU to know  what to do.

1

Get out of the car immediately. Do not honk your horn and expect the train to stop; a train will not be able to come to a complete stop immediately. Even if it is slowing down, it will still plow through you before it can come to a stop. Do not attempt to play chicken with a moving train. It's not backing down; you must. Get out of your automobile, and tell any passengers do to the same.

2

Do not stop to take anything with you. Do not risk your life to gather objects from the back seat (unless they are infant passengers). You may be too late. You may want to take a cell phone if it is in easy reach.

3
Get off of the tracks. As in, as soon as possible.

4

Run towards the direction from which the train is coming. Do not attempt to run away from the train; when the train collides with your car, the wreckage may fly through the air and hit you. Run in the opposite direction of the train. It may be best to take cover, if there is any, to avoid flying debris from the car being smashed by the train.

Did you know that October is Fall Car Care Month?

Did you know that  October is Fall Car Care Month?

Why not take a little time to be car care aware and make sure your vehicle is ready for the harsh winter weather ahead? Taking a few simple steps now can save you the headaches and cost of an emergency breakdown later.

Whether you do it yourself or take your car to a professional service technician,  Car-Lotta Car Sales recommends five proactive steps to make sure your car is ready for winter driving.

1.    Battery – Keep the battery connections clean, tight and corrosion-free. Cold weather is hard on batteries, so it’s wise to check the battery and charging system. Because batteries don’t always give warning signs before they fail, it is advisable to replace batteries that are more than three years old.

2.  Heater, Defrosters and Wiper Blades – Check that the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system are working properly as heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons, such as defrosting. Fall is also a great time to check your air filter. Wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don’t properly clean your windshield should be replaced. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months. When changing the blades, be sure to also check the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir.

3.    Tires – Check the tires, including the tire pressure and tread depth. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly as tires lose pressure when temperatures drop

4.    Brakes – Have the brake system checked, including brake linings, rotors and drums. Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and particularly important when driving on icy or snow-covered roads.

Car-Lotta Credit and Car Sales  reminds you that getting  your vehicle ready for winter while temperatures are still mild is a proactive approach to preventive maintenance that helps ensure safety, reliability and fewer unexpected repairs when severe winter weather strikes.

How Well Do You Maintain Your AUto?

Auto technicians say the key to keeping vehicles running well-today and down the road-is routine maintenance. Yet many drivers tend to stall when it comes to keeping up with some everyday auto-basics.

A survey by the Car Care Council found:

25% of cars had low or dirty engine oil.
  • 13% had low or contaminated brake fluid.
  • 18% had dirty air filters.
  • 17% had inadequate cooling protection or low coolant levels.
  • 16% needed new windshield wiper and 27% had low or contaminated washer fluid.
  • 18 needed new belts
  • Overall, 89% of vehicles were in need of at least one service or repair.

Remember..... A regular service schedule can help keep your car running it’s best!

Car-Lotta wants to ask how well YOU maintain YOUR vehicle!

Drivers have a unique relationship with their automobiles. They name them, they talk to them, they protect them from the elements and damage.

What do Americans love about their automobiles?  The color and style top the list  with power and performance following closely behind. For others, it’s a matter of independence and pride,  some cited the independence their vehicle gives them as their key crush, while nearly others said their pride in paying it off helped inspire their love.

How do drivers’ automobiles make them feel? Just like a great outfit, a can project confidence. Some said their automobiles  make them feel confident, an outward reflection of their achievements. Many said their autos inspire their internal rock star. They also make drivers feel cool,  and  even like a race car driver.

Americans autos are a reflection of their personal style.
