Winter Tires

• These tires are designed for clear roads with a minimal amount of snow and/or ice.

• Winter tires are engineered with a rubber compound that works well in colder weather.

Snow Tires

• These tires are designed for much heavier snow and or ice at the expense of dry road handling. Snow tires don’t do as well on dry roads, but if you plan on driving around in an area with some serious snowfall, then snow tires should be installed on the vehicle.
So with a snow tire, you get chunky tread, a bit less stability on the highway and more noise, but you do get snow traction.

Celebrate Labor Day!

Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. In high society, Labor Day is (or was) considered the last day of the year when it is fashionable for women to wear white.

Labor Day marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons. The responsibility that comes with having a pet is not to be taken lightly. It is up to you to make sure that your pet's needs are met and that you have done everything in your power to make your pet's life a happy one.

1. Make sure your pet has an ID tag. The ID tag tells where your pet lives and of any medical conditions your pet may have. If your pet wanders off, it may be the only thing standing between your pet and the pound!

2. Prevent behavioral problems by enrolling your pet in a behavior training class before it acquires any bad habits.

3. Get your pet a check up from a vet at least once a year.

4. Prepare for disasters. Your pet cannot read the escape plan you have made for your family in case of a flood, fire, or other disaster! Make sure your escape plans include someone in your family having the job of securing or gathering up and removing your pet from your home and taking them to a safe place.

5. Plan for the future. Who will take care of your pet if something happens to you? Make sure you have a "godparent" for all of your pets. This includes short term care as well if you are in the hospital, incapacitated, or out of town.

6. Have a heart –Have your pet neutered or spayed as soon as they are old enough. If you can't afford to have your pet spayed or neutered you may be able to get a voucher to help with the expense.

How to Drive in Rainy Conditions

How to drive safely in Rainy Conditions is simple if you remember that Storms can crop up suddenly and present substantial hazards on the road; especially during Summer. Losing control of your car on wet pavement is a frightening experience.

Skids are scary but hydroplaning is nerve-wracking. Hydroplaning happens when the water in front of your tires builds up faster than your car's weight can push it out of the way. The water pressure causes your car to rise up and slide on a thin layer of water between your tires.

Prevent skids by driving slowly and carefully, especially on curves. Steer and brake with a light touch. When you need to stop or slow, do not brake hard or lock the wheels and risk a skid. Maintain mild pressure on the brake pedal.

Avoid hydroplaning by keeping your tires inflated correctly. Maintain good tire tread. Don't put off replacing worn tires. Slow down when roads are wet, and stay away from puddles. Try to drive in the tire tracks left by the cars in front of you.

To help avoid over-heating, a car´s cooling system, engine hoses, drive belts and battery should be inspected by a mechanic.

Regularly check fluid levels and tire tread depth. To quickly check the tire tread, insert a penny in the tread groove with Lincoln´s head upside down - if you can see the entire head, your tires are worn and should be replaced.

For maximum fuel efficiency, tires should be properly inflated. Hot weather can cause air pressure inside the tire to expand, causing a blowout if the tire is in poor condition.

Use extra caution while driving during a rainstorm, particularly after an extended period without rain, since extreme heat causes oils deposited from vehicles to be absorbed into the road and slick spots can result during rainstorms.

Prepare an emergency kit that is stocked with things that would be needed in the event of a breakdown, such as water, necessary medications, first aid supplies and portable cooling devices, such as battery-powered fans.

Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, which can heat up quickly during hot weather.

When traveling a long distance, try to plan your trip for early in the day or later in the evening when the weather is cooler.

Carry a cell phone and charger in case of emergency.

Remember to always buckle up and never drink and drive.

Talking’ Cars Are Coming Soon to Keep Us Safe!

Before you know it our cars will “talk” to each other, keeping tabs on everything around us and alerting us to threats we aren’t aware of. Ford- Volvo and Audi are a few of the automakers which are developing this technology.

Ford is rolling out a crash-avoidance system that allows cars to communicate with each other at distances of more than 900 feet. It uses GPS and wi-fi signals emitted 10 times a second to provide a 360-degree view around the car. When the system detects a risk — say, someone running a red light at the next intersection — it warns the driver.

Volvo, is testing a “road train.” Road trains, also known as “platooning,” feature vehicles fitted with sensors that monitor the distance, speed and direction of the car in front and mimic its actions. The semi-autonomous cars are “tethered” and follow a lead vehicle driven by a professional driver.

Audi is launching a “Audi Urban Intelligent Assist.” The German automaker, through its Electronics Research Laboratory in Silicon Valley, wants to link drivers to the road via connected cars to ease congestion, increase safety and save time in traffic.

Other companies are developing technology, which the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says could address as many as 4.3 million crashes, or about 80 percent of accidents that don’t involve drunk or stoned drivers.

Before you take that next trip in the car with a young child, the American Academy of Pediatrics has some new car seat recommendations for All Ages:

Remember ...

Select a car seat based on your child's age, height, and weight.

Keep your child in the proper car seat for as long as possible.

All children under 13 should ride in the back seat.

In a new policy published in the April 2011 the AAP advises parents to keep their toddlers in rear-facing car seats until age 2, or until they reach the maximum height and weight for their seat. It also advises that most children will need to ride in a belt-positioning booster seat until they have reached 4 feet 9 inches tall and are between 8 and 12 years of age.

Did you know that the changing seasons mean different things for your vehicle?

Here are some spring car cleaning tips can help you protect yourself and your investment.

The interior

Prepare the interior surfaces and upholstery of your car for more sun exposure. If you have leather seats, use a good leather protector to avoid any cracking and if you have cloth interiors invest in a product that will help avoid fading from sun exposure.

The exterior

The exterior of your car is exposed to different elements during different seasons. Make sure to rid your car’s exterior of any residue left over from the winter months and pay close attention to your tires, which can also suffer from buildup during the snowy season.

Remember that spring is allergy season. This means that your car will probably be covered in pollen at some point. Pollen build up on your car can not only worsen your allergy symptoms, but impair your vision on the road, so be sure to keep your car washed.

Give your car a thorough inspection

Taking a good look at the underside of your car and inspecting it for any rust or other corrosion. Pay close attention to your fluid levels. Change or refill your oil, wiper fluid, coolant and other lubricants to make sure your car is ready for the warmer months. Ever wonder about the life of a Pothole??

Potholes begin after snow or rain seeps into the soil below the road surface.The moisture freezes when temperatures drop, causing the ground to expand and push the pavement up. As temperatures rise, the ground returns to normal level but the pavement often remains raised. This creates a gap between the pavement and the ground below it.

When vehicles drive over this cavity, the pavement surface cracks and falls into the hollow space, leading to the birth of another pothole.

Children with Special Needs Get Help to Travel Safe

PennDOT is helping hospitals and pediatric practices statewide to ensure children with limited mobility and other special health-care needs can travel safely. PennDOT has invested $91,666 in state funds to purchase 111 specialized car seats through a contract with the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Traffic Injury Prevention Project .

Through the contract, 65 Hope Car Beds and 46 Snug Seat Hippo car seats were purchased. The car bed is a crash-tested seat for children with conditions such as spina bifida, scoliosis and other conditions that prevent them from being able to sit in standard car seats. Hippo seats allow children with hip casts to travel in a crash-tested seat.

Seats will be delivered to 49 hospitals and 16 pediatric practices statewide. Each pediatric practice will receive one car bed and each hospital will receive one car bed and one Hippo seat to be loaned to families and caregivers. The seats are expected to last six to 10 years, depending on the model.

Child safety seats reduce the risk of death in passenger cars by 71% for infants, and by 54% for toddlers ages 1 to 4 years.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends booster seats for children until they are at least 8 years of age or 4'9" tall.

All children ages 12 years and younger should ride in the back seat. You should avoid placing children in front of airbags. Putting children in the back seat eliminates the injury risk of deployed front passenger-side airbags and places children in the safest part of the vehicle in the event of a crash.

Overall, for children less than 16 years, riding in the back seat is associated with a 40% reduction in the risk of serious injury.

Traveling with Your Pet

If your like most ... once you bring animals into your life, they quickly become members of the family.

Recent studies show that 74 percent of pet owners think of them as a child or family member. With such a high percentage, it should come as no surprise that many of these families want to take their adored pet with them whenever they travel. Some pets love cars – others would much rather stay put for the rest of their lives.

Fortunately, there are many options to fit every animal's needs. Here are some pet travel tips .

Train them young. Cats generally don't like cars, but puppies can be trained fairly easily to become good travellers. Play with the puppy inside the car when it is stationary. Then switch the engine on. When it is used to this, start taking the dog for short rides.

Crate them. For larger dogs, it is a good idea to crate them, especially for long journeys. This will also protect a dog in case of an accident. Many animals will feel safer inside their crate, and therefore will put up less of a performance.

Pet carriers. If an animal does not like travelling, then it is very dangerous to transport them in a car, unless they are in a proper pet carrier of some sort. A clawing cat, or a yelping puppy can easily distract the driver and cause an accident. Don't use a cardboard box – it is too easy to escape from these.
Pet partitions. When travelling with big dogs, it is a good idea to have part of the car partitioned, so that the driver cannot be distracted.
Never leave animals inside a locked car in the sun. Remember, even if you park in the shade, the sun moves as the day goes on. If you have to leave an animal in the car, make sure it is inside a parking garage and that the windows are left open a few centimetres.

Window seats. A wide open window is an invitation to disaster. Some pets can be relied on not to jump through the window, but why take the chance? Most dogs like a bit of a breeze when they are inside a car, but ten centimeters will do it.
When driving a long way, remember that your dog needs to get out every now and then to answer the call of nature. Also make sure that you give your dog water whenever you stop. When travelling long distances with an animal that is not used to the car, save your sanity – and probably that of the animal – by going to the vet and getting a sedative before the journey. Remember also that you can get anti-nausea treatment if your animal gets car sick on long journeys.

Seatbelts. Seatbelts are not that restrictive, as dogs will still be able to sit up, look out of the window or lie down, whichever they choose. But, they will go a long way to protecting the dog.

Bring familiar items from home with them in the vehicle including favorite toys and a towel or bedding still retaining the sent of home.

We don’t question the importance of traveling safely and we should always provide the same protection for our pets.

Taking Care of Your Vehicle During the Extremely Cold Weather

With the sub-zero temperatures here, you may want to take extra care of their vehicles. Very cold, extended, weather can wreak havoc on your car . Here are a couple of tips:

Park your vehicle in a garage if possible to avoid a dead battery.

If you need a jump, make sure the cables are attached correctly.

Don't pour hot water into frozen locks, you're more likely to damage your car, than unfreeze the locks.

Watch your tire pressure, the super cold will reduce it.

Warm your car before driving for a bit to get the oil moving over all the engine parts.

A little preventative maintenance is better than being stranded out in the cold. Here are a few things you can do to keep your car running without problems in the winter months:

Use lower grade oil during the winter. If the oil is too thick, the engine does not get the proper lubrication. See your owner’s manual for the recommended oil grade for winter season.

Check and maintain antifreeze, also called coolant, levels. It keeps the water in your radiator and engine from freezing in cold temps and from boiling over in the summer. It also lubricates the moving parts, like the water pump. It is suggested that you put at least 50% antifreeze in your radiator.

Check your vehicle’s battery. Having a poor battery can result in bad starting conditions in your car. Look for cracks and brakes in your cable or have a mechanic check it to make sure your battery is good.

Look for deterioration on belts and hoses. You want to check wear on hoses such as hardening and softening. Give a good squeeze to check for leakage, cracks, or other damage on the exterior of the hose to determine if they need to be replaced. Also check your car’s serpentine belt for cracks, cuts, pieces missing, or if it is noisy when running.

Get quality windshield wipers and windshield washer fluid with anti-freeze solution to ensure you have good visibility.

Check the heater and windshield defroster for proper operation. It is a good idea to check the air-conditioner, which speeds up the defrost process.

Check your tire pressure as air pressure in a cold tire drops (read your owner’s manual to find the proper tire inflation). Tire pressure is important during the winter due to low traction in wet or snowy road conditions. It will also help protect against wheel damage when your vehicle drives over potholes. While you’re at it, check the spare tire for proper inflation too.

You can do much of this on your own but it is a good idea to take your vehicle to a reliable mechanic to ensure your car is running smoothly.

Winter Wiper Blades

Is it necessary to change your wiper blades to Winter Blades?
Winter Blades have a rubber sheath over all of the moving components inside of the wiper. These are springs built inside of it to actually hug the wiper blade tight to your windshield. You have probably already noticed in the wintertime, you're driving along and try and use your wiper blades, they won't touch all of the windshield itself. It'll actually leave streaks and portions of it that are un cleaned. This is from is from ice, debris, and snow, getting inside of the springs and keeping them from contacting your windshield. What the rubber sheath does is keep those formed particles from affecting the way the mechanics of the wiper blade has been designed to operate.

Is it a good idea if you do a lot of driving in the wintertime to go ahead and change out your wiper blades? You decide!

Stranded in Bad Weather

If You Become Stranded in bad weather ...

•Don't leave your car unless you know exactly where you are, how far it is to possible help, and are certain you will improve your situation.

•Light two flares and place one at each end of the car a safe distance away. Hang a brightly colored cloth from your antenna.

•Run the engine and heater for about 10 minutes every hour or so depending upon the amount of gas in the tank.
•Use the woolen items and blankets to keep warm and to protect yourself from frostbite and hypothermia .

•Keep at least one window open slightly so snow and ice don't seal your car shut.

•Eat a hard candy to keep your mouth moist.

Getting Stuck in the Snow

Unfortunately getting stuck in the snow is unavoidable in NEPA. The following are a few tips to help get you out:

1. Do not spin your wheels.( This will only dig you in deeper)

2. Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way.

3. Use a light touch on the gas, to ease your car out.

4. Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car.

5. Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels, to help get traction.

6. Try rocking the vehicle. Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you're in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.

An emergency situation on the road can arise at any time and you must be prepared. Along with having a full tank of gas, you should carry the following items in your trunk:

•Properly inflated spare tire, wheel wrench and tripod-type jack •Shovel •Jumper cables •Bag of salt or cat litter and Tool kit.

Winter fuel-Is there really a difference?

Yes there is!!

The difference between conventional summer- and winter-blend gasoline has to do with the Reid Vapor Pressure of the fuel. RVP relates to the volatility of a gasoline. The Environmental Protection Agency says conventional summer-blend gasoline contains 1.7 percent more energy than winter-blend gas, which contributes to the summer blend’s slightly better gas mileage. Cars using summer-blend gasoline spew fewer harmful emissions and get slightly better fuel economy than those using winter-blend gas during the summer months.

It is recommended a switch between the two fuels happens twice a year, once in the fall (winter blend) and again in the spring (summer blend). Summer-blend gasoline is typically more expensive to produce than the winter blend, and it won’t affect vehicle performance or the durability of the engine and fuel system, according to the EPA.

What fuel is in your vehicle? Odds are that living in NEPA you are probably already filling up with Winter Blend.

Daylight Saving Time was instituted in the United States during Wold War I in order to save energy for war production by taking advantage of the later hours of daylight between April and October.

Distracted Driving is not just texting. The same thing applies to eating and drinking – they shouldn’t be done while driving. Most cars these days come with cup holders, it’s true, but there’s nothing that says you have to use them while driving. Eating is even worse than drinking. If you are going to be eating you should either get out of your car to eat, or eat while the car is parked and then resume your driving. You may be thinking this sounds like overkill, but it’s not. Odds are you probably won’t have a wreck while sipping on a soft drink or eating a hamburger, but you’ve greatly increased your chances of it happening. Your odds of not having a collision are much greater if you don’t do these things.

Ask yourself this: What would it mean for car safety if everyone on the road were eating a sloppy double cheeseburger while driving? Do you think car safety would go up, or go down? When you think about it that way it becomes clear just what safety risks eating and drinking in your car are. Fast food is sloppy and messy and often quite hot, and it can cause you to lose control if you drop it. Soft drinks are ice cold and can spill, having the same effect. Even without spills you just cannot control a vehicle as well with a drink or a burrito in one hand. It’s simply impossible.

With school starting back up, CarLotta Credit and Car Sales thought these 5 ways to help your child do better in school could be very helpful. As a parent, after working a hard and long day yourself...it is easy to forget about your children's needs sometimes...

1) Listen. Listen, really listen without tv or other distractions, to what they tell you about their day. How do you feel when are trying to tell someone you care about, how your day went and they just "yes" you to death and watch tv? You can find out so much about your child just from this step. Are they feeling bullied? Are they happy with their teachers? Is the bus ride okay? Do they need help with their homework?

2) Read To Your Kids. When they are young, read to them. When they are older, read with them and encourage them to read on their own. If you feel books are too expensive to buy, there is always the library. The type of book or subject is less important then the actually reading. Set aside limited times for tv, video games and computer. This will give time for reading. How about trading 1 hour of tv for each 1/2 hour reading?

3) If they need help with their schoolwork, give it to them. If you do not feel qualified to help them with 7th grade math for example, ask around. You'd be surprised how many adults, and older kids, are good at school work...and are willing to help for free. You just have to ask. What help and support are available after school or in school?

4) Look at your child's homework and read their reports and papers. Give encouragement, maybe fix a spelling error or two and just show that you care. It is not about you helping them get an "A". It is about you caring about what they are working on and spending their entire day worrying about.

5) BE POSITIVE. It can be very difficult after a long day, but reward their effort with encouragement. How hard do you work if someone is on your case and negative every day? How about hiding a funny card or note in one of their books or tablets to bring a smile during a hectic day, or before a test? The small things do help.

These are just 5, but you see what I mean. If you love them...tell them and show them every day.

1) First Aid Kit. You never know what can happen. If you have kids, this is even more important. You might want to add a few extra bandages to the kit. They are small and are not affected by the temperature changes in your car.

How And Why To Check Your Cars Fluids!

A major component of car care is making sure your fluid levels are in check.
Those are... your engine oil, your transmission fluid and your engine coolant (anti-freeze).

* Engine Oil levels should be checked monthly. In your engine compartment, find your dip stick, pull it out, wipe it off, shove it back in and carefully pull it back out. Your oil should be a nice brownish color. It it's black or has "clouds in it", it's time for an oil change. If it's cloudy, you may have bigger problems and you definitely need to have it looked at. Look at your dip stick after a fresh dip and make sure your oil line is where it should be. There is an indicator on the stick that will help you determine that. If you need oil, either top it off with some new oil or bring it to someone who knows how to add oil, if you don't. Your oil should be changed out completely every three months or 5000 miles for optimal results.

* Transmission Fluid is very much like checking your oil but for most cars it has to be running and in park. Pull your dip stick, wipe it and shove it back in and pull out again. This time look at your levels, again there is an indicator to help with this. Transmission fluid should be a red color and should not smell likes its burned. If levels are low then either top it off or see your local lube shop for some assistance. Transmission fluid change intervals can vary widely for each type of car. Check your owners manual for recommendations.

* Engine Coolant (antifreeze) needs to be at a proper level. Coolant does just what is sounds like, it cools the engine. Make sure your engine is off and that your vehicle is completely cooled before you touch your radiator cap. Make sure your car is on level ground. If your coolant is low, certainly add more but know that if this keeps happening, you probably have a leak and you need to have your radiator checked out soon. Coolant should be changed about every 2-3 years.

These are the basics, but they can save you time, trouble and money down the road.

Care & Feeding Of Your Cars Exhaust System

The exhaust system is seldom noticed by car owners until something is wrong.
An exhaust system is metal piping system used to direct burnt gases away from the engine running into the muffler and going out in the open air. It will include several of the following systems:

* Starting at the engine, exhaust manifolds are intended to gather exhaust gases spent by burning fuel and channel them into one tube. They are often made of cast iron to endure the extreme heat. They are extremely durable and will normally last the life of a car. If they do fail, it is normally a stress crack. This may be able to be welded or replaced. Any leaks in your exhaust system can be dangerous as gases may leak into the interior of the car.

* Next in line is the muffler. The main function of a muffler is to reduce exhaust noise. They are along the exhaust pipe and it uses a resonating chamber which is constructed to reduce the sound coming from the engine.These do wear out and need to be replaced. Rust from the outside, or condensation from the inside are the main culprits.

* A catalytic converter follows the muffler and is a mechanism used to decrease the amount of poisonous gas emitted from a combustion engine. Since the late 1970's , it is used today in the USA and other countries around the world. It uses a reaction (chemical or metal) to "trap" some of the worst of the pollutants emitted by your cars engine. The accumulation of the pollutants does cause them to fail every 70,000 miles or so. Your vehicle will not run properly, and some cars will not run at all if the converter is blocked. A blocked converter can also cause you "check engine" light to come on.

* The pipe and the tail pipe is the end of the exhaust pipe where it vents to open air and it is used to connect the other components together. This pipe, and its connectors do rust and may need to be replaced

Because it is located externally and under the hood the exhaust system is easy to reach and you can do the repair yourself if you have the proper equipment. Otherwise just bring your car to the nearest repair shop so your exhaust system can be fixed. We recommend the muffler chains (Cole, Mieneke, Midas) as they are usually less expensive and give a lifetime warranty. Get a quote from 2 different shops just to be safe.

With proper care and feeding your cars exhaust system will last a long time and will not need major repairs.

How To Change A Flat Tire

It is good to know how to change a flat or damaged tire.Like everything, with a bit of instruction, when faced with a flat tire you should be prepared.
* The first thing you need to do it identify which tire is flat, could be bulging from the low air pressure and look flat compared to the others. However if you have trouble you could use a digital tire pressure gauge to tell you which tire is losing air.
* The second thing you'll need to do is get the required tools, in new cars the tools will most definitely be with the spare tire or in the trunk somewhere. Older cars may not have these tools as the previous owner may have kept them or lost them. (a tire iron /socket wrench and car jack) are all there in case you need them.
There should be a specific point on the body work of the car that is designed for the jack to attach to, using the tools, find the point and ensure the jack stays in place. You should be careful to make sure you don't use the jack in the wrong place as this can damage the bodywork or trim. Before raising the car you will need to loosen the nuts on the wheel you are replacing, this is because the wheel will simply spin round if you try to loosen the nuts once elevated. Be sure you are on level ground and base of the jack is solid and not wobbly.
Make sure you loosen or tighten nuts in opposite pairs; this is the safest way to use wheel nuts according to mechanics.
* Once the wheel nuts are loose, begin raising the car up on the jack, only raise the car as much as is needed, any more and you could make the car unstable and it could fall off the jack. It is always safest to use a jack on a clear flat surface so it doesn't slip, if you have stopped on gravel you could place a piece of strong flat wood underneath the jack to secure it.
Once that car is raised on the jack remove the wheel nuts completely and lift the wheel away from the car, you need to store this wheel in your car. Next you need to bring out the spare tire and place it on the car, attaching the wheel nuts again. Once they are as tight as you can get them, lower the car off the jack and tighten up the nuts again with the tire iron or wrench.
* Your car should now be safe to drive, however depending on the vehicle, your spare tire may not be suitable to drive on indefinitely so it is advisable to drive to your nearest garage or tire store to get your main wheel repaired. It is also important to remember that some spare wheels are only designed to be used at low speeds so consider this if you are traveling on a highway.

The dream of putting 200,000 miles on your vehicle – once restricted to an assortment of auto buffs and non-conformists willing to spend a small fortune on repairs -- is fast becoming a real possibility for millions of drivers..
Not so long ago, people counted themselves lucky if their car made it 100,000 miles before it gave out. As late as the 1980s and 1990s, many odometers didn’t even carry enough digits to handle 100k.
But to echo the hopeful baby boomer assertion that 60 is the new 40, one could say that 200,000 miles is the new 100,000 – thanks primarily to improvements in quality.
Consumers are embracing the idea if the statistical studies and the growing number of “high mileage” car clubs around the country are any indication.
One of the groups, the Allpar 200,000 Club, boasts 4,000 members. They consider it a point of pride to be able drive Mopar / Chrysler products with more than 200,000 miles on them.

Last year, the “Cash for Clunkers” program, designed to boost auto sales and get gas-guzzling vehicles off the road, showed just how high the age of cars, trucks and SUVs has risen.
The typical vehicle turned in under the program last year was 14 years old and averaged 160,000 miles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Since it took a bonus of $3,500 to $4,500 to persuade owners to turn these vehicles in, thousands of them would likely still be on the road and accumulating mileage if they hadn’t been scrapped.
Outside the bonus program, the average age of scrapped vehicles lately has been nearly as high as the “clunkers’” -- about 13 years, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
To some extent, tough economic conditions are leading consumers to hang onto their cars longer, said Lonnie Miller, vice president for marketing and industry analysis at R. L. Polk & Co., a publisher of automotive data. “People are cooling their jets on buying new vehicles.”
But the trend was underway well before the last downturn. Average vehicle age has climbed steadily for a decade, Miller notes, going from 8.8 years in 1999 to 10.6 years late last year.
He believes longer warranties and financing contracts are two key factors behind the trend, along with the higher vehicle quality.

The longer life spans could be just the beginning. Many of the “clunkers” turned in for scrapping last year were manufactured in the mid-1990s. Experts expect longer life spans from the technologically advanced cars sold today.
Studies by J.D. Power & Associates, a consumer and product research firm, do suggest that cars are being built to last longer, Miller noted. In its latest dependability report, the firm said that overall performance of vehicles after three years of ownership was “at an all-time high.”

Between 2003 and 2010, average number of problems per 100 vehicles plummeted from 355 to 155 industry-wide, according to the company. Twenty-five of the 36 brands in the study showed improvement.
“I have a hard time criticizing any company that builds or sells a car in this country,” said Matt Keegan, publisher of two automotive web sites “The quality is so much higher than it used to be.”
In many cases, quality no longer varies substantially from one car brand to another either, said Erich Merkle, a Grand Rapids, Mich.-based auto analyst and publisher of the autoconomy newsletter.
“The Detroit 3 have improved to the point of taking that differentiator away from the Hondas and the Toyotas.” Owners have to be conscientious about maintenance, of course. In return, they get the chance to bring their future costs under control. With longer warranties to reduce their financial risks, Miller said consumers are poised to “steer their own automotive destinies.”
“If you are presented with good products, you have the opportunity to get some of your money back after your purchase. A car today can really last if you take care of it.”
Richard Kahn, the publisher of a Subaru website, The Subaru High Mileage Club and owner of a New Hampshire landscaping company, pushed a ‘93 Subaru to 282,000 miles.
He changed engine oil every 5,000 miles, usually with synthetic oil. “I don't ignore little noises. I have them addressed right away.
"It helps to have a solidly built vehicle to begin with. But if it is properly maintained even an unreliable vehicle can probably do better than a solidly built vehicle if you neglect the maintenance."
After 13 years on the road, his Legacy was a bit rusty but it still ran. Kahn was able to trade it in on a new Subaru Impreza WRX. "If I had known that I could have bought replacement body panels, I probably would still have it."
"I don't believe in letting things die," he said. "Quite frankly, I don't like the whole new-car car buying process" Kahn launched subaruhighmileageclub.com in 2000. He says nearly 1,000 Subaru owners use the site, which includes a forum where they can trade tips on keeping their cars running.
Most owners would rather not drive their vehicles into oblivion, of course. The average driver keeps a new vehicle nearly 6 years -- up from about four and one-half years in 2002, according to R.L. Polk figures. Then it is sold once or twice, on average, over its lifetime.
Even if owners aren’t out to set mileage records, careful adherence to maintenance schedules pays off in a higher resale value.
“If you do the recommended maintenance, you will be selling a car that should still be in good condition after 100,000 miles or higher,” Keegan said.
The trend toward greater vehicle longevity is not hopeful sign to everyone. Efforts to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions could falter if consumers hang onto cars with older technology for years.
And the auto industry naturally would like to see people tire of repairing their vehicles.
In 2009, consumers stayed away from dealerships in droves, with consequences that were disastrous to the industry and communities dependent on it. New car sales fell to less than 9 million units a year, compared to more than 17 million in its heyday.
Merkle said it may take several years to reach 16 million units a year or more. But he expects automakers to rely on new technologies and designs to lure owners out of their aging sheet metal.
“Many people don’t buy new vehicles because they need to,” Merkle said. “They buy them because they want to.”

If I Don't Have My Down Payment Now, Will You Hold The Car I Want Until I Do?

Well, the short answer is no, we will not hold it for you. But...there really is no reason, as we have new inventory arriving 3 times each week. In addition, we have trade ins, and we buy cars from people that just want to sell them also.

We stock over 100 cars per month at our 3 locations. If we don't have it at this moment, it is sure to be on its way in. If you don't see it on our lots, ask, it may be in service or in our clean up / recon areas where we wash, wax and shampoo the interiors of all our cars.

Keep in mind, on average we put $1000 of repairs and / or reconditioning costs into each one of our cars BEFORE it is sold to you. It takes time to do this and the cars are not put on the lot until they are ready.
