Do You Know The School Bus Stopping Laws?

It's that time... The kids are going back to school.

Did you know that  every year, children are needlessly injured or killed by drivers passing stopped school buses.

Pennsylvania's School Bus Stopping Laws Are :

When you meet or overtake a stopped school bus with red signal lights flashing and stop arm extended, you MUST STOP.

When you approach an inter section where a school bus is stopped with red signal lights flashing and stop arm extended,  you MUST STOP.

You MUST STOP at least ten (10) feet away from the school bus.

You MUST WAIT until the red lights have stopped flashing and the stop arm has been withdrawn before moving.

DO NOT MOVE until all the children have reached a place of safety.

Penalties if convicted of violating Pennsylvania´s School Bus Stopping Law include:

*$250 fine

*Five points on your driving record

Do You Have Your Yellow Dot?

PennDOT is shining the spotlight on a program that could save your life! It's called the "Yellow DOT Program."

This program assists citizens in the "golden hour" of emergency care following a traffic accident when they may not be able to communicate their needs themselves. Placing a Yellow Dot decal in your vehicle's rear window alerts first responders to check your glove compartment for vital information to ensure you receive the medical attention you need. The program is a cooperative effort between PennDOT, the state departments of Health and Aging, the Pennsylvania State Police, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, first responders, and local law enforcement.

How can citizens participate?

To receive a "Yellow DOT," you can stop into any DMV in the area or many state representatives offices carry them as well. You can also get one online by heading here.

Once you receive a "Yellow Dot," you're encouraged to place it on the back left windshield of your car.

To update your emergency contact information which is synced to your Pennsylvania Driver's License, head here!

Are You A Sensible or Aggressive Driver ??

Did you know that driving sensibly can save you fuel?
Each 5 mph  you drive over  60 mph  is like paying an additional 24 cents per gallon of gas!

Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas and can lower your gales mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by  5 percent around town. While each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at different speed ( or range of speeds), gas mileage usually decreases at speeds above 60 mph.

Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money.

Car-Lotta reminds you to Drive Safe-  The life you save may be your own!
